R50 mln revamp on track

2011-10-11 00:00

THE R50 million expansion project at Midlands Liberty Mall is on track, with a 1 600 square metre Dis-Chem Pharmacy store due to open its doors on December 1.

The expansion includes the Mr Funtubbles Fabulous Funfair, an extended security block, office space, new toilet blocks and the new lift to be completed by the end of the month.

Liberty Properties general manager Thea Marx said the expansion projects are sustainable and a good investment.

“This project is exciting for us because it opens many doors,” Marx said at a roof wetting yesterday at the mall.

She said there has been a great demand to have Dis-Chem at the mall.

“Every time we did a market research people would ask for Dis-Chem and it’s so remarkable how the brand has just grown in South Africa,” Marx added.

Dis-Chem has been rated as the country’s best pharmacy chain by Professional Management Review, voted as best pharmacy, best medical supply store and best health store in both The Star Your Choice and Pretoria News readers survey, as well as in the Leisure Options readers choice awards.

The general manager of Dis-Chem Midlands Liberty Mall, Francois Slabbert, told The Witness yesterday that the store will create about 70 to 80 jobs.

Slabbert said, “A small percentage of the employees will be transferred from other branches with a majority being newly employed candidates.”

He said they do not perceive Clicks Pharmacy as competition even though they share a certain percentage of the market.

At present, the interior of the R20,8 million outlet is being fitted out.

Dis-Chem trading times will conform to the standard trading hours of the mall.

“Dis-Chem is a great addition to the tenant mix and is highly anticipated by the consumer,” said centre manager Cassy Fourie.

The Mr Funtubbles Fabulous Fun Fair, being constructed in the newly revamped food court area, will have custom-made rides, kiosks, and a 4D cinema.

The Midlands Liberty Mall said, “Locals who have enjoyed the Disneyworld experience will have an idea of what to expect when their cinema chairs start to shake as part of the experience.”
