R65?mln for Townhill revamp

2014-01-17 00:00

THE deputy minister of Health, Dr Gwen Ramokgopa, paid a surprise visit to Townhill Hospital yesterday to see what challenges the hospital faces as the government has pledged R65 million towards renovating it.

The walk-about showed that the hospital has been working hard to meet the Department of Health’s standards. Ramokgopa inspected the infrastructure, facilities and talked to the patients.

“This hospital is adequately maintained and the patients are well cared for. It is clean and the commitment of the staff humbles me,” said Ramokgopa.

Ramokgopa said that government has already started investing in the renovation of mental health hospitals to ensure that they are up to acceptable standards and norms.

She added that the Department of Health is taking steps toward putting mental health on the forefront nationally as more people are becoming vulnerable to mental illness due to a stressful lifestyle and abuse of drugs.

CEO of Townhill Hospital Zanele Mfeka agreed that there has been an increase in patients being admitted due to substance abuse. She added the support from the provincial government has been a great help.

“We really appreciate the deputy minister coming here and offering support with regards to infrastructure,” Mfeka said.

Currently the hospital has 304 patients and once the renovations are completed, it will be able to accommodate 425 patients.
