R7,5?mln ICC security contract revoked

ROLEPLAYERS in the security industry in KZN have welcomed a decision setting aside a controversial R7,5 million contract to provide security at the Durban International Convention Centre (ICC).

Independent adjudicator MC Nkomo found in a judgment on February 13, that the contract awarded to Isidingo Security Services by the ICC and eThekwini Municipality was invalid, as Isindingo’s bid did not meet all mandatory criteria.

He referred the matter back to the Bid Adjudication Committee for reconsideration.

The awarding of the contract to Isidingo sparked criticism last year, and was the subject of appeals.

Gary Tintinger, chairperson of the Security Association of SA, KZN, and a director of Enforce Security, welcomed the ruling.

He said in a statement non-compliance was rife in the market.

“This practice not only undermines the professionalism of the industry but also puts at risk the quality of security services provided. Non-compliant companies which win lucrative tenders based on cheaper services are ultimately robbing their most important assets — their security officers,” he said.

“These security officers are denied basic employment benefits such as leave and overtime pay, to name a few, which not only impacts their lives and those of their families, but also understandably affects their level of service.”

Tintinger said he hoped the judgment would sway large corporates to rethink their responsibility.
