RTI warns truck owners: ‘We are clamping down’

2007-12-13 00:00

THE Transport Department issued a stringent warning yesterday to truck owners and operators to ensure that their drivers and vehicles are in optimum condition for travelling over the holiday period.

Spokesman Colin Govender said "more than a dozen accidents" have occurred on the N3 between Van Reenen and Durban in the last two weeks, with three truck accidents occurring yesterday morning.

Although these truck accidents were "minor", the resulting traffic congestion is a major concern.

"It is obvious that owners and transport operators are aware of the heavy motor vehicle collisions over the past two weeks, and it is obvious that drivers are told to double-up on their travels with less rest to meet demands of the receiving depots," Govender said.

The department will clamp down on road users during this peak season, especially targeting trucks travelling down Van Reenen’s Pass towards Tugela Plaza.

Clamp-down operations will also be effective at the Mooi River Toll Plaza rest stop.

"The message to heavy motor vehicle owners and operators is that the department will investigate all different aspects, including driver fatigue and vehicle roadworthiness. If there is any doubt, appropriate action will be taken, to the extent of unroadworthy vehicles being immediately removed from roads," Govender warned
