Race car driver's rise and decline

2008-02-01 00:00

Yash Raj Banner created Dhoom with speeding bikes; Tara Rum Pum focuses on speeding cars. This film has lots of style garnished with substance. It focuses on the human spirit of a family and how they overcome stumbling blocks in their lives.

Rajveer Singh (Saif Ali Khan) works on the pit crew of a racing team and has a passion for driving. His talent is discovered by his manager, Harry (Javed Jafferi). Rajveer crosses paths with Radhika (Rani Mukherji) and is instantly smitten by her. Harry gives Rajveer a chance to be the driver of his racing team called “Speeding Saddles”.

Radhika is coerced into making her presence at Rajveer's first race. He emerges victorious and a new star - RV - is born. RV racing takes off instantly and his love life blossoms after a whirlwind romance - Radhika and RV marry and over the years the couple have two children Priya (Angelina Idnani) and Ranveer (Ali Haji).

Tragedy strikes and RV is involved in a racing accident and has to be hospitalised for a couple of months. A year later he returns to the race track but has been mentally scared by his accident and no longer has the same passion he initially did for racing. After a series of losses his life takes a turn for the worst - the drama unfolds from riches-to-rags of this spendthrift car racer who is economically challenged as he moves from up-market Manhattan to downtown Queens. It shows you the power of love and bonding, which can make you go through the thick and thin of life with light humour, romance, thrills, tragedy, test of human spirit and final triumph.

Saif Ali Khan gives a superb performance. Rani Mukherji looks ravishing and is proficient.

Angelina Idnani and Ali Haji are cute and impressive. Javed Jafferi is brilliant in a first-time serious role - a bit too serious for me.

Director Siddharth Raj Anand notches up another box office winner with a fast-moving storyline and a high-octane climax.

This film provides good family entertainment and is strongly recommended.
