Racial slur at gym: Case postponed as accused woman seeks plea deal

2012-03-15 00:00

A WOMAN who spent a night in jail on Wednesday last week after she allegedly called a fellow gym user a “stupid k****r” is looking to reach a settlement with the state.

The Witness learnt yesterday that the incident is also under investigation by her employer, Exxaro Resources Limited.

In a statement Exxaro said the company “does not condone such behaviour, as it is against our value and culture system”.

Ashika Ramdeen (39) appeared in the Richards Bay Magistrate’s Court yesterday on a charge of crimen injuria. The case was postponed to today as she is seeking a plea agreement. Lawyer Jabulani Cebekhulu, who was on the receiving end of the slur, said he had heard Ramdeen was seeking a plea bargain, but that he had not yet seen a proposal.

“Once I have seen the proposal, I will assess it and let the processes of the court unfold,” he said.

Ramdeen’s husband, Nakesh, said his wife was aware of what she had said and that she was “deeply apologetic” and remorseful.
