Racing: Summer Cup

2012-11-30 00:00

GAUTENG’S greatest horseracing event, the Sansui Summer Cup at Turffontein Racecourse, starts at 12.35 pm tomorrow and continues into the night under floodlights, with Race 12 at 7.50 pm.

Seven of the 12 races are feature events and many of South Africa’s top horses will be in action. There will be loads of entertainment between races and the Sansui Sound Experience — with artists including Fresh & Euphonik, Mi Casa, DJ Kent and Poppy from 5FM — is expected to be a smash hit.

The Summer Cup is nearly as old as Johannesburg. The first horserace in that city took place in December 1886 and the inaugural Summer Cup was run the following year. Many famous horses have won the race over the years, including Java and Elevation, who both won three years running.

The Summer Cup is Race 7 on the card and starts at 4.50 pm.

Admission is R50. Book through Computicket. There will be live coverage of the full race meeting from noon on horseracing’s exclusive TV channel, Tellytrack (channel 239 on DStv), and will be live on SS4 from 4.30 pm.
