‘Racist hotel’: KZN Legislature turns to HRC

2011-11-03 00:00

THE KZN Legislature has issued a formal complaint to the Human Rights Commission (HRC) after alleged racist treatment at an Eshowe hotel.

KZN Legislature deputy speaker Mtholephi Mthimkhulu said a report was finalised on Tuesday.

“I completed a letter to be sent to the HRC and they are going to take the matter further,” said Mthimkhulu.

The request for the HRC intervention relates back to an incident which occurred on September 28 at the century old George Hotel where KZN legislature officials were staying during a Parliament to the People Imbizo geared towards the needs of the elderly.

It is alleged the black MPLs were denied access to the hotel restaurant, told to eat in the conference room where trestle tables and uncovered plastic chairs were set up, that the food arrived late, the staff were rude to them specifically and that the rooms were not up to scratch, while white MPLs allegedly had better rooms and could eat in the restaurant.

While a number of MPs have stood behind the complaint, a number of other MPs and private patrons who were present said the entire matter has been blown out of proportion.

Hotel owner Richard Chennells said he will allow the HRC, a Chapter Nine institution which will investigate the validity of the claims, to continue their investigation before he makes any formal statement.
