Radio boss sues for libel

2011-10-01 00:00

CONTROVERSIAL Pietermaritzburg businessman Sunny Gayadin had to stay unusually tight-lipped yesterday as Gary Govindsamy, head of news at Lotus FM, accused him of “picking on the most intimate part of my mother’s anatomy”.

Govindsamy is suing Gayadin for R100 000 for defamation, which he hopes “will teach Gayadin a lesson”.

Gayadin told Weekend Witness that Govindsamy refused to cover a story about Bollywood star Sham.

“I was obviously irked, but typical of a journalist he is exaggerating what happened,” Gayadin said.

As Govindsamy related what Gayadin allegedly said to him, listeners, including the magistrate, alternated between embarrassment and amusement.

“Her called me a black south Indian low-life and used the derogatory term Mandhraji, which is used to humiliate Indians from the southern parts of India, the Tamil speakers. He said that he will buy Radio Lotus and then fire me.

“What confuses me is that he has darker skin than me,” said Govindsamy.

He also told the court that Gayadin accused him of taking bribes, something he immediately reported to his superiors at the SABC.

“The allegation that I am taking bribes is serious as it is an indictment on my character.”

A text message allegedly sent to Govindsamy from Gayadin read: “You are living by taking bribery, your time has come and you will see your own “Ass” by Christmas.”

This prompted a few listeners to leave the courtroom since it appeared they could not contain their laughter.

The matter has been adjourned until Monday.
