Radio boss tells how Gayadin ‘swore my mother’

2011-10-04 00:00

PIERCING stares were exchanged between complainant Gary Govindsamy, head of Lotus FM News, and multi-millionaire businessman Sunny Gayadin during the cross-examination of Govindsamy in the Durban Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

Govindsamy is suing Gayadin for R100 000 for defamation, which he said he hopes “will teach Gayadin a lesson”.

Douglas Tobias cross-examined Govindsamy about a “heated” telephone conversation in December 2009 in which Gayadin apparently “swore Govindsamy’s mother” and accused him of accepting bribes.

Tobias said he finds it strange that Govindsamy did not have an affidavit with details of a police report of a case of intimidation against Gayadin.

In his testimony, Govindsamy said the verbal attack followed his decision not to broadcast a story about a court order Gayadin had brought against Bollywood singer Shaan.

Govindsamy is the Lotus FM radio news assignments editor.

In court on Friday he said staff members could not verify the facts about the court order and decided not to carry the story.

He said Gayadin swore at him saying “your mother’s p***, who you f****** spoke to?”

“I said, ‘Sunny, please don’t swear at me’. He then said, ‘your sister’s p***’. I again told him not to swear at me and that I was speaking to him like a gentleman.

“He again swore at me saying, ‘you’re a madarchod [suggesting he sleeps with his mother]’.

“He said he would buy Radio Lotus and I would be the ‘first black mandraji [low-life South Indian] bastard [he would] fire’,” said Govindsamy.

“He also said he wanted to see me at a meeting on Monday where, in the presence of others, he would slap me. He then put the phone down.”

Govindsamy said he was humiliated by Gayadin’s words.
