Radio to get chopper for rhino airborne

2012-09-27 00:00

EAST Coast Radio has teamed up with various organisations to launch KZN Rhino Watch, a project to provide aerial patrols of game parks, in partnership with the Lawrence Anthony Earth Organisation and King Shaka Aviation.

At the weekend, four rhinos were poached in Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park and five other carcases were found. In total, 46 rhinos have been killed in KZN this year.

East Coast Radio’s KZN Rhino Watch project co-ordinator, Diane Macpherson, said the station decided to support the helicopter initiative, which had been running for several months before being grounded at the end of April this year due to lack of funding.

Macpherson said the dream is to get four helicopters up in the skies to cover KZN, but this would take a lot of resources to achieve.

“To fund one chopper for a year will cost R1,2 million.

“We’re hoping KwaZulu-Natalians will rise up in unison and give their support to KZN Rhino Watch.”

All donations made will go via East Coast Radio’s partner, the Lawrence Anthony Earth Organisation. See for information about how to get involved.
