Raid: stolen cosmetics recovered

2014-07-14 00:00

COSMETICS stolen from a truck that was allegedly hijacked in Cato Ridge on July 8, were recovered when police officers raided a warehouse in Manchester Road, Allandale, on Friday.

The sting operation was led by Captain Linda Gcwabaza, branch commander at Camperdown police station.

Nine men, including two Ethopians, were arrested after they were caught loading trucks and two Iveco vans with a R3 million worth of products from Unilever.

Captain Thulani Zwane said: “Through investigation, it appeared that the goods — all cosmetics — were taken from a truck that was allegedly hijacked at Cato Ridge on July 8. It was further established that the hijacking case was in fact a false case.

“Goods from the truck were allegedly off-loaded at the warehouse and later a false case was opened at Camperdown police station. The driver who reported the false hijacking is still at large.”

During the Pietermaritzburg operation, the police recovered five vehicles, including an Iveco, a VW Golf and a Mercedes-Benz.

The men arrested at the scene, who are aged between 19 and 59, have been charged with truck-jacking and possession of property suspected to be stolen. They are expected to appear in the Camperdown Magistrate’s Court today.

Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant-General Mmamonnye Ngobeni warned that they would act harshly against those who reported false cases to the police.

“We also thank the public who gave information that led to the arrests and recovery of the goods,” Ngobeni said.
