Railway rape accused in court

2012-04-18 00:00

THE man alleged to be the railway rapist (32) made a brief appearance at the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court yesterday, and said he intended to plead guilty to his crimes.

The man entered the dock and sat quietly looking at his hand. One of his fingers had a big cut and appeared swollen.

He applied for legal aid.

When asked by the court whether he would apply for bail, he said he did not want bail as he intended to plead guilty to the charges.

The man is charged with six counts of rape and two counts of robbery. He is alleged to have taken cellphones, bags and wallets from his victims. He cannot be named or photographed until he has pleaded to the charges.

The suspect was arrested on Sunday while having a drink at a tavern in the city centre. Police said they believed he was fishing for his next victim when they nabbed him.

The rapist allegedly lured his victims into taxis, promising to place them in jobs.

State prosecutor Zandile Nzimande asked the court for a seven-day remand, saying further investigations were necessary. He said the accused “will have to consult with the state advocate from the high court as he intends to plead guilty”.

Magistrate Reard Abrahams remanded the accused in custody until Tuesday for the outcome of the consultation with the state advocate.
