Rain causes premier to postpone function

2011-01-26 00:00

YESTERDAY’S persistent and heavy rains resulted in the postponement of a livestock development intervention launch that was to be hosted by the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Agriculture, Environmental Affairs and Rural Development at the Manzamhlophe Dipping Centre in Ezinqoleni.

The department was due to unveil a plan to improve livestock production in the province by coming up with a holistic approach that encompasses all key aspects of animal husbandry practices.

It was to be attended by KZN Premier Zweli Mkhize and MEC for Agriculture Lydia Johnson. Both Mkhize and Johnson went to the venue but were unable to address the hundreds of community members who had braved the weather as the event never got under way.

A spokesperson for the Agriculture Department, Ncumisa Mafunda, said the marquee that was to accommodate those in attendance could not be erected safely.

“We have not yet decided on a new date for the launch to take place but we can confirm that it will happen,” Mafunda said.
