Rain ruins Inland U19 match

2007-11-27 00:00

After being sent in, Inland compiled a creditable 280 for six declared in 67 overs, to which Border replied with 233 for five in 57.4 overs by the time the three-day match was abandoned as a draw.

Visitors KZN Inland and hosts Border saw much of their match at Buffalo Park — including the entire second day — disrupted by rain.

However, in the cricket that was played, several Inland players put their hands up with fine performances despite the on-off character of the match. Inland opener Kyllin Vardhan fell 14 runs short of a century, number five Patrick Lambie hit an undefeated 53, while attacking number seven Ryan Aitken scored 52.

Promising partnerships of over 50 were mounted for the first, second, third and sixth wickets but failed to kick on to the 100-plus mark. Inland declared at 280 for six wickets, 13 short of the compulsory 80, as they attempted to move the game along.

Border made a good fist of their opportunity at the crease, posting 233 for five off 57.4 overs when the match was called off. Leg-spinner Byron Ovenstone delivered 18 overs of teasing leg-spin for a return of two wickets for 72, while nippy left-arm seamer Athi Maposa picked up two for 29 in 10 probing overs.

Maposa, just finished grade 11 at Ixopo High School, is moving to Maritzburg College next year and his progress will be followed with interest.

Scores in brief: KZN Inland U19 first innings 280/6 dec (Kyllin Vardhan 86, Patrick Lambie 53*, Ryan Aitken 52). Border U19 first innings 233/5 (Athi Maposa 2-29, Byron Ovenstone 2-74). Match drawn.
