Rains: falls in February way below average

2011-02-18 00:00

WHILE February rainfall has been markedly below average so far, climatologists predict a wetter autumn.

Data released to The Witness by the SA Weather Office yesterday show the monthly average for February in Pietermaritzburg at 117 mm. So far a scant 15,4 mm has been measured. The January rainfall average is 141 mm, and 103mm was recorded.

Durban has recorded just 10,6 mm so far this month in contrast to its February average of 124 mm. In January it had 92,2 mm against an average 142 mm.

But for February, March and April there are enhanced probabilities for above-normal rainfall in KZN and indeed, much of the country.

KZN can expect higher rainfall for May and June as well. Enhanced probability is considered to be more than 45%. The bad news is that below-normal minimum and maximum temperatures are expected until June.
