Rains wreak havoc on KZN roads

2009-09-18 00:00

WET weather yesterday caused several accidents on KwaZulu-Natal roads, leaving at least four people, including a cyclist in Amanzimtoti, seriously injured.

In the first incident, a motorist and his passenger were seriously injured when his car was hit by a truck in New Greytown Road in Pietermaritzburg.

ER24 spokesman Derrick Banks said the truck hit the side of the car leaving the driver of the car and his passenger in a serious condition.

“The driver had already been taken out of the vehicle by EMRS, but the patient required advanced life support intervention to be performed.

“He was stabilised on the scene and transported to Northdale Hospital in a serious condition.”

Banks said poor visibility and the wet road could have been a factor in the collision.

In a separate incident, 12 people were injured when two taxis collided on the Mangusuthu Highway in Umlazi. One of the taxis landed on a steep embankment.

Banks said one passenger was seriously injured, while 11 others sustained minor injuries.

They were treated at several hospitals.

A cyclist was critically injured this morning along the Kingsway Road in Amanzimtoti.

Netcare spokesman Chris Botha said the cyclist was riding along Kingsway Road towards Prospecton when a taxi came from the opposite direction and collided with him. “With the impact the rider went through the windscreen of the taxi and then landed on the roadway.”
