THIS Sunday sees Durban hosting the Diabetes SA 5km Global Walk, starting at 8 am at the Amphitheatre on the Lower Marine Parade. More than 3 000 walkers are expected, including Sharks hooker and Diabetes SA brand ambassador Kyle Cooper. Other celebrities include Kini Shandu from Gagasi FM and Neville Pillay from Lotus FM. Branch manager at Diabetes SA in Durban Jenny Russell said she was more than happy with the support they had received from the local community. Diabetes is often dismissed and overlooked as an illness, when it is one of the world’s biggest killers. Raising awareness through the walk brings home how to live with diabetes and educated people on the importance of a healthy lifestyle. “We are on a winning streak with people supporting these celebrities. Now we need large corporates, local officials and small businesses to encourage their employees to participate,” said Russell. She added that many schools in Durban had indicated their willingness to get involved and she found this encouraging as youngsters were made aware of diabetes and living healthier lifestyles. Entry for the walk is R50, with proceeds used to help underprivileged diabetes sufferers. The first 1 500 walkers to finish will receive a goodie bag and walkers and supporters can receive free glucose, BMI, kidney function and blood pressure tests. Walkers can register at www.diabetessa.co.za or on the day, from 7 am to 7.45 am. Contact Pat on 082 499 5222 or visit blogspot www.globaldiabetesrunwalkdurban.blogspot.com for further details.
