Ramsgate: Tavern killers jailed

2011-10-24 00:00

TWO men involved in a fight at a tavern which resulted in the death of a third man were sentenced in the high court inRamsgate last week.

Mzwandile Johnson Mavundla (27) and Sifiso Madlala (20) received 15 and 10 year jail sentences respectively.

They were arrested for the murder of Emmanuel Mkhize (40) in March 2008. Mkhize was stabbed 13 times after a fight broke out between the three at a tavern in the Port Shepstone CBD. He died on his way to hospital. Both men fled the scene and were arrested a few days later.

Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid said the sentences should serve as a warning to other tavern fighters. She said police concentrate on liquor outlets during the festive period to curb murder and assaults, and that patrons will face the wrath of the law if they endanger the lives of others.
