Ramsgate trial for murder accused

THE man accused of killing an elderly Port Edward couple for an unpaid debt of R150 goes on trial next week.

Sgidi Xolani Sonjica (20) will enter the dock in the high court in Ramsgate on Monday, charged with murdering Eric (70) and Elizabeth Robins (75) on June 17.

He also faces a count of robbery with aggravating circumstances, after items were stolen from the couple’s home.

Sonjica appeared in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court yesterday. The case was transferred to Ramsgate for plea and trial.

Sonjica was downcast during court proceedings. He acknowledged and accepted the indictment read out to court.

According to the indictment, Sonjica said he had previously worked for the couple as a gardener and was owed an amount of R150.

The state alleges he went to the house, armed with a knife, with the intent to commit murder if the debt was not paid.

The indictment stated that payment was not made and Sonjica allegedly stabbed Eric Robins in the chest a few times.

The knife broke. He then allegedly used a knife and scissors from the kitchen to stab Elizabeth Robins repeatedly.

He allegedly fled with R200, a cellphone, a cordless phone and a few personal items.

He was arrested in Southbroom on June 29.
