Random shootings: two plead not guilty

2011-02-18 00:00

THE mission of two 22-year-old Cato Ridge men was to randomly shoot people with a pistol acquired in a robbery and they in fact shot dead four men, a high court indictment alleges.

Bongumusa Mdladla and Ntuthuko Shozi, both from Mpumalanga near Cato Ridge, have pleaded not guilty to the charges.

They are accused of four murders, attempted murder, aggravated robbery and illegal possession of the murder weapon, a pistol.

Yesterday witness Kehla Sibisi said that after midnight one night in May 2009 he was in a tavern when he saw Mdladla shoot Mthoko Mthungwa, who fell down.

He shot Mthungwa again, went to him, rifled through his clothes, took money out of his pocket and bought cigarettes.

Sibisi said Mdladla then went outside the tavern and he heard two shots but he did not see who fired and who was shot.

The indictment alleges that Mdladla forced Themba Khumalo out of the tavern and then shot him dead.

Afterwards Mdladla went back into the tavern and warned other patrons that he would brook no interference from them.

The indictment alleges that both the accused men, taking turns at handling the stolen pistol, shot dead Bongani Ngcobo and Bongani Ngcongo, whom they met on a road.

The victims were left lying on the road and later died of gunshot wounds.

The indictment also alleges that Mdladla and another person robbed Mbombo Hlophe of the pistol and that they tried to kill Hlophe by shooting at him.

The trial continues today.
