Rape: Wear black, join protest tomorrow

2013-02-21 00:00

THE gang rape and murder of Anene Booysen (17) earlier this month has led South Africans to call for action.

The Bredasdorp girl was found in time for her to name one of the suspects, but she died later in hospital.

Residents in Pietermaritzburg are planning to wear black tomorrow in protest against the rape of women and children. A protest is planned at the city hall from 7 am till 8 am.

Protest organiser Lwando Gaba has called on businesses, government departments, churches and schools to come together and say “enough is enough”.

Gaba, sales and marketing manager at a local private college, told The Witness that everyone should join the fight against rape.

“We should not just talk when it is on TV or in the media. We should be talking about it and create awareness every day.”

Gaba plans to make the campaign a monthly event in the belief it will make a difference.
