Rape: folks turn in teens

2011-10-08 00:00

THREE of the gang of 14 men who raped a woman in Greytown have been turned in to the police by their parents and a fourth suspect was arrested later. The suspects are aged between 19 and 22.

Police said they were expecting to arrest more suspects before the end of yesterday, as they are all known to the victim.

The 24-year-old woman was raped in the Matimatolo area on Sunday evening.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said the police went to the homes of the suspects on Wednesday evening and told their parents that they were wanted in connection with the incident.

“The suspects were not at home at the time and the parents seemed to be disturbed by the incident. On Thursday the parents arrived at the station with the suspects. They will appear at the Greytown Magistrate’s Court on Monday facing rape charges,” Zwane said.

The Witness reported yesterday that the victim was returning home from a wedding when the gang ambushed her.

They allegedly dragged her for about a kilometre before they found a spot where they took turns raping her.

Early last month Portia Sibisi (13) from the same area went missing on a Sunday after visiting a relative.

Her mutilated body was found in a bushy area the following day.

She had stab wounds and dog bites all over her body. One ear was missing and flesh from the inside of her thighs had been sliced off.

The police believe Portia may have been raped and mutilated before she was stabbed to death.
