Rape, murder accused ‘roughed up’

2009-11-20 00:00

The trial of Faizel Mohamed Sayed (35), accused of 29 charges, including the kidnapping, rape and murder of Nombuso Nhlangulela (9), was postponed yesterday after he complained of being roughly treated by prison officers on the way to court.

Sayed’s lawyer told the court his client was handcuffed and manacled and put “robustly” into the van, and was hurt when the vehicle was driven “in a robust manner”.

Advocate Louis Barnard said Sayed was shaken and the chains caused swelling in his arthritic joints. He said Sayed did not feel up to following court proceedings.

Acting Judge Ben van Heerden agreed to postpone the case until today, commenting that the actions of the prison officers, if true, are “childish and immature” and had caused a delay.

Sayed also complained that he is unable to sleep and eat in prison because of threats from other prisoners.

He has pleaded not guilty to the charges, which, in addition to the murder of the child, include the rape of nine women and teenagers between April and June last year.
