Rape: teacher says pupil was his girlfriend

2012-11-07 00:00

AN EMPANGENI maths teacher who was allegedly caught “red-handed” raping a 15-year-old pupil in Mzingwenya Forest appeared in eSikhawini Regional Court yesterday.

The court was packed with ANC Women’s League members and residents who were rooting for justice.

The court heard that the girl was on her way to school one day in May when the teacher offered her a lift. He allegedly drove her to the forest, pulled a mat out of his car and raped her on the ground.

He only stopped raping her when passers-by accosted him and called the police.

The 39-year-old teacher, who is married, told the court that the teenager was his girlfriend and said he could produce a witness — a temporary teacher at the same school — to back up his claims.

He said that on March 10 and 17 he penetrated the schoolgirl with a finger, and that on April 20 they had sexual intercourse.

His name has been withheld to protect the child’s identity.

The teenager testified that she asked the man if he was married and he said he was, but that having sex with the same person all the time “was like eating chicken curry every day”.

Outside court, local councillor Mfundo Mthenjana said the law should take its course.

The mother of the girl said last night that her daughter was receiving counselling, which had helped her start focusing on schoolwork again.

The case was postponed to November 20, when the witness for the teacher is set to testify. The teacher has pleaded not guilty and is in custody, having been denied bail.
