Rape victim to get R200?000

2013-12-05 00:00

A MAN who was 17 years old when he was raped in a police cell at Pongola by a 43-year-old inmate in October 2007, will be paid R200 000 in damages and all his legal costs will be met by the state.

This is in terms of an agreement which was reached in the Pietermaritzburg high court between the victim and lawyers for the minister of safety and security.

The state admitted that it was liable to pay damages as police were negligent for having locked the juvenile in a cell with the older prisoner.
