Rapes: Mpumalanga karate coach gets seven life sentences, pastor gets one

2014-03-06 00:00

A KARATE coach was this week sentenced to seven life sentences after he was found guilty of raping seven of his pupils.

John Mohamed Mosiane (23) raped boys aged between four and 10 years old at Mpumalanga.

According to a police statement yesterday, Mosiane would spot the young victims and invite them to karate training.

During the karate lessons, he would take them separately and rape them. The boys told their parents and three cases of rape were opened in June 2009 and Mosiane was arrested. Immediately after his arrest another four boys came forward and said he had raped them too.

In another case this week, the Pinetown Regional Court sentenced Nhlanhla Mbuyazi (35), a pastor, to life imprisonment for raping a 14-year-old girl. He had told her that she was born with bad luck and had to perform a cleansing ceremony. He took her to the cemetery at kwaDabeka to perform the ceremony, and raped her there. The girl told her family and a case of rape was opened.

The KZN provincial commissioner Lieutenant-General Mmamonnye Ngobeni welcomed the sentences. “This will certainly send out a strong message to other criminals who prey on defenceless women and children,” she said.
