Rapist: Three life terms for Plessislaer man

2012-03-05 00:00

A 27-YEAR-OLD Plessislaer man has been given three life sentences plus a total of 14 years’ jail for a series of rapes and related offences in the Haniville, Copesville area in 2009.

Benzani Nxumalo’s other offences were housebreaking with intent to commit rape, kidnapping, theft of cellular phones and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.

Two of his rape victims were teenagers aged 15 and 14.

He was sentenced in the Pietermaritzburg High Court on Friday.

According to the indictment, Nxumalo rented a room at the homestead of the teens’ aunt.

On December 28 they were visiting her and were at home alone. Nxumalo forced a door open to gain entry, forced them at gunpoint to come to his room, tied their hands with shoelaces and raped them repeatedly.

Another victim, an adult woman, was raped four times on the night of March 30, 2010, after Nxumalo accosted her with a firearm while she was walking alone.

She was also punched, pushed, slapped, kicked and throttled.

Acting Judge Kobus Booyens refused Nxumalo leave to appeal against his convictions and sentences and said no other court would have come to a different conclusion. He said he was of the view there were “no redeeming features” in the case that would justify lesser terms than the prescribed minimum sentences.
