Rapist gets life plus 90

2009-06-20 00:00

THE rapist who conducted a “reign of terror” over young women in Pietermaritzburg in January and February last year was sentenced to two terms of life plus a total of 90 years’ imprisonment by Acting Judge Ben van Heerden yesterday.

The sentences were ordered to run concurrently.

Mlungisi Mluleki Msimanga (27) of Ntabamhlophe near Estcourt, used a variety of ruses to lure his four victims, including drugs, kidnapping at knifepoint and “smooth talk”.

The two life sentences were ironically not for rapes he committed, but in respect of two instances where he invited unknown men they encountered to also rape his victims.

The minimum sentence prescribed for when a vicitim is raped more than once is life. The judge found no compelling reason not to impose the life term.

Acting Judge van Heerden said yesterday that the evidence showed he acted “like a coward”. He selected as his victims young women who were small and fragile so that he could easily overpower them.

One victim was raped while she was unconscious after she drunk a spiked drink offered to her by Msimanga at Hlalanathi Lodge in the city centre.

Judge van Heerden sentenced Msimanga to life imprisonment for the rape of two women by other men; to 10 years imprisonment for each of the four rapes he himself perpetrated; to 15 years on each of three counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances, two years for theft and to three years for kidnapping.

Msimanga was refused leave to appeal against his conviction.
