Rapist gets triple life sentence

2009-04-02 00:00

A rape accused was handed down a triple life sentence for three counts of rape and 20 years' imprisonment for burglary and robbery, at a high court sitting held in Ladysmith recently.

The accused, 29-year-old Muzi Percival Nkosi, and five other accomplices forced their way into a house in Tsakane, Steadville, in May last year.

Captain Charmaine Struwig of the police said the owner of the house and his girlfriend, who was visiting from another town, were asleep at the time. The six suspects stole cell phones, valuable items and a vehicle from the couple. During the incident four of the suspects took turns raping the 25-year-old woman repeatedly.

"They then dragged the frightened woman into the yard where they again took turns raping her. The woman was beaten, stabbed in the head and bitten in the face by her attackers."

She was later hospitalised.

Police immediately began searching for the suspects and within hours had arrested one walking along the road in Tsakane, while a second was arrested at a house in Tsakane soon after.

The other suspects fled from the area and are still being sought by police. The stolen vehicle was recovered.

Investigating officer, Detective Inspector Nolan Govender from the Ladysmith Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences office admitted that he felt ecstatic knowing that he had a role to play in the accused receiving a triple life sentence.
