Rapist gets two life sentences

2013-06-27 00:00

A MAN who confessed to the rape and murder of a seven-year-old girl at Margate on June 15, as well as the earlier rape of a 60-year-old married woman in her home, was yesterday handed two life sentences plus 15 years’ imprisonment.

Brian Jula (25) was on parole at the time of the offences, having been released from custody in January this year, acting high court judge Thoba Poyo-Dlwati was told.

He has two previous convictions for housebreaking with intent to steal and theft, committed in 2005 and 2012.

The judge said she was unable to find any substantial or compelling circumstances that would justify lesser sentences than the prescribed minimum sentences for the crimes.

Jula admitted he raped Thabisile Nhlumayo on June 15 after giving her and two friends who were playing on the roadside some “vetkoek” and then luring her into a forest. He throttled her to death while violently raping her, he said.

He also pleaded guilty to raping a 60-year-old woman in her home on May 11.

In his statement to court, Jula said he fled when the woman’s husband arrived home.
