Rapist to hear his sentence today

2013-03-06 00:00

SENTENCE will be passed today on the remaining two men who made up a gang of three that invaded a Pietermaritzburg home and attacked a mother and daughter on February 21.

Deputy Judge President Achmat Jappie convicted Tankiso Mthembu (24) of two counts of rape of the younger woman, as well as the aggravated robbery of the rape victim and her mother.

Mthembu was convicted of the rape he perpetrated himself as well as the rape committed by a fellow gang member, because he was present during the rape and helped to prevent the woman from escaping.

His co-accused, Maesole Xakatha (28), was convicted only of the aggravated robbery charge.

Both men, who are from Copesville, pleaded guilty to the charges.

Sentence had been passed on the third member of their gang, Khotso Mohlomi, who also pleaded guilty. On Friday, he was jailed for life for his part in the rapes and to 15 years’ imprisonment for housebreaking and robbery.

Judge Jappie said that the crimes were appalling.

The men admitted they had decided to rob the victims, who were not at home, at about lunchtime.

They crept into the yard and hid. When the women arrived home, the men entered through an open kitchen door.

Mthembu said he saw the younger woman in a T-shirt and underclothes, which aroused him.

He then raped her on a couch, followed by Mohlomi.

The woman’s hands were bound with cable ties.

Mohlomi drove off with the victims’ car and various items, while Mthembu and Xakatha left on foot.
