Rapist to spend life in prison

2008-03-04 00:00

A CONVICTED rapist was sentenced to life imprisonment at the Estcourt Regional Court yesterday.

Xolani Koli Mchunu (25) will spend the rest of his life in jail for having abducted and repeatedly raped a 19-year-old girl in 2006.

Mchunu’s accomplice in the kidnapping, Petros Bhunu Mdunge (22), will serve two years in jail for his contribution to the crime.

Mchunu and Mdunge accosted the victim when she went to fetch water from a spring in the Endikini area of Wembezi on October 22, 2006.

They dragged the girl to Mchunu’s residence where Mchunu then kept her overnight against her will and continuously raped her.

At 4 am the following morning, the girl managed to escape from the house.

The police arrested both Mchunu and Mdunge on February 24, 2008.

During their appearance in court on February 28, 2008, Mdunge was found guilty of kidnapping.

Mchunu was convicted of both rape and kidnapping.

The investigating officer in the case, Detective Inspector Frans “Bhubesi” Hartwell, was commended for his success in the investigation.

His commander, Captain M.E. Mazibuko, encouraged Hartwell to continue in the same vein as in 2007 where he notched up seven life sentences for various cases he investigated.

Mazibuko also encouraged the Wembezi community to come forward to assist the police in other investigations.

He also sent out a stern warning to criminals that “Bhubesi” (lion) is hot on their trails and determined to bring them to book for their misdeeds.
