Rates dispute: Howick residents unite

2011-06-15 00:00

HOWICK residents’ and ratepayers’ associations are joining forces to take on the uMngeni Municipality over unaffordable rates.

Surveys in several Howick residential areas found that the way the valuation process has been conducted has pushed up rates.

One of the worst affected areas is Howick West, where residents face increases from 68% to over 200%.

The Howick West Ratepayers’ Association will hold a meeting on Sunday to discuss the rates crisis at the Howick West Community Hall at 2.30 pm for 3 pm. It is expected to last for an hour.

The association’s Mano Naidoo said the increases mean that residents could have to pay R300 to R500 more per month. This, combined with an annual 23% electricity increase for the next three years as well as increases for water, sewage and refuse removal, could make municipal costs unaffordable for most households.

Naidoo urged community members to attend the meeting, saying the community’s future depends on community participation.

Meanwhile the uMngeni Ratepayers’ Forum is meeting to plan how to tackle the town’s rates dispute.

The ratepayers and residents associations are affiliated to the forum and include the Concerned Ratepayers’ Group.
