Rates forum: united platform sought for PMB

2010-08-19 00:00

MOVES are afoot to form a combined ratepayers’ association in Pietermaritzburg as hard-pressed residents allege they are “footing the bill for the gross mismanagement of the past”.

The Msunduzi Rates Forum (MRF) will be holding a public meeting on Saturday to look at this option. The meeting will be at 1.30 pm at the H.S. Ebrahim School in Barnabas Road (opposite Debi Market.)

MRF chairperson Babs Sithapersad said they are getting nowhere in their negotiations with the municipality over the flawed valuation roll.

Sithapersad said the MRF met Mayor Mike Tarr, city administrator Johann Mettler and MEC for Finance Ina Cronje and there has been no progress.

He said that in fact residents are noticing from their July municipal bills that they are worse off.

“We are being asked to foot the bill for gross mismanagement, while some of those responsible are still receiving salaries from the municipality.”

He added that it appears that the only way forward is to unite and form a combined ratepayers’ association.

Sithapersad urged all residents to attend the meeting.
