Raw deal for stink-filled school

2008-10-15 00:00

Learning has been unpleasant for over a week at Forest Hill Primary School as the teachers and pupils had to endure the stench of raw sewage spilling from a clogged drain near a stream behind the school.

Acting principal Alphonso Jasson said the stink from the sewage, which is about two-and-a-half metres from the kitchen and six classrooms, has caused discomfort to pupils and teachers.

He said school management telephoned the Msunduzi Municipality on a number of occasions, but the phones were unanswered. The school turned to the services of private contractors, but all they could do was to spray chemicals to reduce the smell.

The sewage could not be flushed away as debris from the chopping down of alien vegetation has clogged the sewage drain.

“We are sitting with a problem that is disrupting learning. It is unhygienic and worries us as the sewage is very close to the school’s kitchens,” said Jasson.

Asked about the sewage problem, the municipality said the stench came from the rotting vegetation clogging the drain. Council spokeswoman Evodia Mahlangu said: “The stream was polluted with debris (not sewage) being deposited into the stream canal and the tree branches have fallen into the stream, which was hampering the free flow of water.”

She added that the situation will be monitored and that the drainage division will be requested to clear up the stream.
