Reaching out: Liberty Properties contributes R2,4 mln for France centre

2009-12-04 00:00

LIBERTY Properties has contributed R2,4 million towards the development of a community centre project in France, an impoverished settlement on the outskirts of Pietermaritzburg.

Liberty Properties CEO Samuel Ogbu said that as a development company, they are motivated by regeneration and this is a good opportunity to create something concrete to assist in the fight against poverty, unemployment, HIV and AIDS, teenage pregnancy and illiteracy.

The drop-in centre will consist of a community room where meals are served and homework supervised, a reception area, a Child Advocacy Centre, a social worker’s office, a laundry, a kitchen, an outdoor play area, toilets and a clinic serviced monthly by the Department of Health with a view to making the facility a fully-fledged clinic over the next two years.

The project is co-ordinated by the Reach Out Foundation, which said Liberty’s funding will ensure its vision for a state-of-the-art centre becomes a reality.

The drop-in project has become a team effort, with the award-winning Grinaker-LTA project team coming on board as the main contractor with sponsorship of time and expertise.

Other sponsors include The Witness, Quad Africa, Bentels Associates International, Crane Registered Quantity Surveyors, RPP Consulting Engineers, AKI Consulting, Building Code Consultants, GHC Africa, Benny Bongers Land Surveyors, CM Safety Consultants and the Southern Sun Hotel.
