Reaction: It’s not enough, says Des Hanson’s father

2009-04-09 00:00

Speaking to The Witness yesterday, Basil Hanson, Desmond’s father, vented his frustration at what he felt was a light sentence meted out to his son’s killer.

“I cannot believe it. He deliberately rode into my son and dragged him 30 metres. If it wasn’t that a lamp post stopped him, he would have dragged him further.”

He said his son was a popular member of the traffic department. “I can show you a video of my son’s funeral. There were 97 official vehicles there. He worked full-time for the traffic department, but was a reservist for the police horse unit. This is just devastating.” He said he too had been a traffic officer for 30 years.

Des Hanson had 15 years’ service in the municipal traffic department and was a police reservist for eight years, attaining the rank of sergeant.

After his death, an enormous response on The Witness website paid tribute to his public spirit and his value as a traffic officer and police reservist.
