Readers help mourning Copesville woman

2011-11-04 00:00

MANDLA Dlamini (46), who was featured with his partner on page 7 of The Witness on Tuesday in a photo essay entitled Coping in Copesville, died in Northdale Hospital on Monday morning.

His death came a day before their story was published.

After the story by intern photographer Lucky Maibi was published, readers who wanted to lend a helping hand called The Witness.

They brought parcels of food, toiletries, clothes, cutlery and other items, which were delivered yesterday to Dlamini’s grieving partner, Fikile Ndlovu (46), at Shonti near Copesville.

Ndlovu (46) broke down and cried when the goods were delivered to her home.

She lives in a small informal house made of planks with a plastic roof, and begs in the streets to get by.

“I don’t even know how I’m going to bury him.

“I don’t have money since neither of us worked,” said Ndlovu.

Dlamini was admitted to hospital last week after the photographer visited them.

“What hurts me even more is that I couldn’t go see him on Sunday in hospital because I didn’t have taxi fare.

“And I didn’t want to visit him empty-handed,” she said crying.

Dlamini said that even though her life partner was very ill, she did not expect that he would die this soon.

“I am happy about the parcels that I received from The Witness readers, but very sad at the same time because it was for the both of us and now he’s no longer around.

“When I look at these bags I just think of him,” Ndlovu said.
