Reasonably entertaining with lots of crude sexual humour

THE crucial part of that title is “high”. This is a stoner comedy set in a mythical world, which may explain the presence of James Franco — who also starred in Pineapple Express — a stoner comedy set more conventionally in the modern world.

And Franco isn’t alone: there are a slew of A-listers present, including Natalie Portman, fresh from winning an Oscar for Black Swan. A girl’s gotta have fun, and playing a kick-ass fighter clad in not very much must have been a welcome change of pace from playing an overwrought ballerina in skimpy tutus.

The story is a quest. Layabout stoner Prince Thadeous (Danny McBride) must go with his over-achieving brother Fabeous (Franco) to rescue Fabeous’s bride, Belladonna (Zooey Deschanel), whom he freed from the tower of evil wizard Lazare (Justin Theroux), but who was stolen back by Lazare at their wedding.

There are knights, swords and adversaries. There are also wagon chases, mincing servants with secrets, knights harbouring unspoken desires and lots of weed smoking.

Unfortunately, there is also a lot of very crude sexual joking, some of it of the casually homophobic kind that seems to infect so much popular culture.

That’s a pity, because otherwise Your Highness is reasonably entertaining, and the stars seem to be having quite a bit of fun. The teenagers in the row in front of me didn’t seem to know what to make of it, laughing uncomfortably at the sexual stuff.

Your Highness is a movie possibly better suited to late night television than afternoons at the mall. Popcorn isn’t really the ideal accompaniment. ***
