Recognition for Stefan Terblanche

2008-10-29 00:00

There was some recognition for Sharks fullback Stefan Terblanche yesterday when he was named the Absa Currie Cup Player of the Month.

The 33-year-old Terblanche, the form fullback in the Currie Cup this year, was ignored by Springbok coach Peter de Villiers for the tour to the UK next month, but he was rewarded for the part he had played in the Sharks triumph this year.

John Plumtree, who also took the award last month, was again named Coach of the Month.

Terblanche and head coach Plumtree were each rewarded with R10 000 in prize money.

The Coach of the Month is voted for by a five-man panel of top media personalities in South Africa, while all eight coaches in the Currie Cup nominated their Player of the Month for October — as they did in July, August and September.

Loose forwards Cobus Grobbelaar (Lions), Heinrich Brüssow (FS Cheetahs) and Jean Deysel (Sharks) were all nominated for the October Player of the Month Award, along with scrumhalves Ruan Pienaar (Sharks) and Fourie du Preez (Blue Bulls.

Brüssow (July), Deysel (August) and Pienaar (September) are all former Player of the Month winners.

“To be honest, I don’t really know how to describe my feelings at the moment,” said the Sharks veteran. “There’s relief, joy, excitement — it was just fantastic to win the Currie Cup in front of our own people; supporters, family and friends.”

Terblanche was delighted that Plumtree, away in the Seychelles on holiday, was recognised.

“He’s done a wonderful job at the Sharks and he deserves all the accolades coming his way at present.”
