Record 1?600 animals for Royal Show

2011-05-17 00:00

A RECORD 1 600 animals have been entered for Royal Agricultural Show, which celebrates its 160th anniversary this year.

The record numbers are being attributed in part to the fact that the Royal Show is hosting four national championships — for Hereford cattle and Ile de France, Suffolk and Hampshire Downs sheep — during the event, which runs from May 27 to June 5 at the Royal Showgrounds in Pietermaritzburg.

Mike Moncur, spokesperson for the sheep section, confirmed there is a record entry of 660 animals, including 35 white Dorpers, that will be competing in the Royal Show for the first time. There are also 170 Ile de France sheep entered for the breed national championships.

Numbers have also been bolstered by some 162 animals entered by 22 breeders for the 2011 Voermol Hereford National Championships, which are taking place in Pietermaritzburg for the first time in 25 years, and a Boer goat section, for which more than 100 animals are entered.

Judging in this year’s Royal Show agricultural classes will get under way on Friday, May 27, with the supreme champions in the sheep section being announced on Wednesday, June 1, and the supreme cattle championships concluding with the Gold Cup presentation in the main arena on Thursday, June 2.
