Record 18 matches to be played in KZN today

2010-09-18 00:00

ON the last Saturday of the third term, there are 18 matches scheduled to take place. This is probably a record at this time of the year, but chiefly due to the earlier start to the cricket season.

The four matches that will be of most interest involve schools in the top rank of cricket in the province. Six of the schools involved will also be playing in the Michaelmas Week at Maritzburg College, starting next Friday.

Westville visit the capital to play against Maritzburg College. The match between these two teams was washed out at the beginning of the year, but College, who have the best record this year amongst KZN schools and have also played more cricket at this early stage, should be seen as overwhelming favourites.

St Charles travel to Durban to play against DHS. During the first term St Charles was on the losing side of a draw and they will be hoping to do better today. The Maritzburg side has had more matches this term and if they can find better form could be very competitive.

Michaelhouse, who had their match cancelled last week against Westville, host Northwood. The latter were given a good drubbing by Hilton last week and they will be hoping for a better performance.

The only other game amongst the top ten is between home side Kearsney and Clifton. Kearsney won comfortably when they played Clifton during the first term and with a number of Kearsney players in form, it should be another win for them today.

Howick, having one of their best seasons ever, will be hosting Weston. The match earlier in the year was won comfortably by Howick and they will likely win again against the young Weston line-up.
