Record prize packet for Miss SA

ROELENE Strauss (21) on Sunday night not only won the Miss SA title for 2014, but also walked off with a prize packet worth more than any other in the history of the competition.

Her prizes, worth a collective R1,3 million, include a Volvo V40 T3 valued at R335 000, R120 000 from Sun International, cosmetic products and spa treatments of R130 000, shoes valued at R120 000 and a Cell C contract of R60 000.

Strauss, who was crowned at Sun City’s Superbowl, will also be living rent-free in a furnished luxury flat for the year of her reign. This is valued at another R240 000.

Penny Coelen Rey (74), who became Miss SA in 1958, said the prizes had changed a lot over the decades.

“I wish I could take part now! I was born too early,” she said yesterday.

“I only got a sewing machine, a pair of stockings, shoes, clothes and a hundred pound note.”

Vera Johns, now Sutherland, who won the title in 1975, received a car, a few sets of designer clothes and a television, which was then still very new in SA.

“I was very excited about my television. It was one of the first ones in South Africa,” Sutherland said yesterday.

“I invited people to come watch telly with me.”

Strauss also received R200 000 from Cell C, which she can use for charity work.

Lorna Potgieter, 1984’s Miss SA, said a good sponsor was a wonderful thing.

“In my time, we had to raise funds ourselves. We did not have such sponsors. I did, however, win lovely prizes, like a Alfa Romeo car, designer clothes, cosmetics, cash and shoes.”

Rey said the Miss SA competition had become a lot more commercial and the focus was on money.

“It is not the same any more.”
