‘Recovery’ teachers finally paid

2008-07-21 00:00

Teachers have finally been paid for work done during the recovery period last year, but due to the large number of pay-outs that need to be processed, there have been “exceptional cases” who might still be waiting, the KwaZulu-Natal Education Department said.

During the recovery period to make up for time lost in the national public strike in June last year, teachers were required to give extra lessons.

Since that time, the teachers have been at loggerheads with the department, which they have accused of being quick to dock salaries while delaying the pay-out process.

MEC Ina Cronje said the payment of arrears was supposed to take place this month.

However, due to the large numbers that needed to be processed, there were cases where the programmed payment was not effected.

Those affected include employees who have recently been promoted. These teachers will be paid out manually and have been asked to visit their nearest service centres.
