Red faces over Reeva picture

2013-02-22 00:00

IT was an honest mistake, the editor of People magazine, Andrea Caknis, said yesterday after mistaking a picture of Reeva Steenkamp for Janine Habana, the wife of rugby star Bryan.

The error is in the current edition, dated today, of the gossip magazine, which was already on the shelves last Thursday, the day Steenkamp was killed.

The spread, of red carpet photos taken at a sport awards event, shows a large photo of Steenkamp, in a tight-fitting black mini, captioned: “Bryan’s wife, Janine Habana”.

Caknis said she feels very embarrassed and can’t apologise enough, saying: “It was an honest mistake and we have already apologised to the Steenkamp and Habana familes.”

She added the new edition, available today, contains a correction and apology.

The magazine has been castigated on social media for the mistake.

Journalist Vanessa Papas said on Facebook: “Bryan, Reeva and Oscar were together on the red carpet [at the Virgin Active Sports Industry Awards].

“Unfortunately, the captions got mixed up. I first realised the mistake [on February 14] but it was already too late, because the magazine had been printed.

“I can’t apologise enough and take full responsibility …”

Trevor Crighton, the Habanas’ publicist, said the magazine contacted them last Thursday. He said they understood it was a mistake, but Bryan asked for and received an apology. He accepted it and considers the matter closed.
