Red tape denies baby boy a name

2012-12-13 00:00

A MPUMALANGA couple is at their wits’ end with the systems at the Home Affairs Department which do not allow them to name their child.

Braam Smith and his wife, Suzette, of Komatipoort, have been struggling for three months to register the early birth of their boy. He was born two months early, only seven months after the birth of his older brother.

Smith said an official at the Home Affairs mobile office at the hospital told them the system did not provide for the registration of two babies from the same parents in the same year. The parents are still awaiting response from Pretoria.
