Reddy to go big for 65th birthday

2014-02-21 00:00

DURBAN businessperson Vivian Reddy says he will throw a concert for 65 000 children at Moses Mabhida Stadium and invite musical superstars from all over the world for his 65th birthday party.

His 61st party tomorrow at the stadium will not be on that scale but nonetheless he has invited 10 000 underprivileged children from poor schools and orphanages to celebrate with him. He has also invited Winnie Madikizela-Mandela to spend the day with the children.

Just like last year, Reddy will give one of the children the opportunity to be “adopted” by the Vivian Reddy Foundation. Last year, Reddy’s themed party “Diamonds in the rough”, presented thousands of children with a chance to be adopted by him for life.

Siseko Dlamini (12) discovered an artificial diamond stashed in a gigantic cake that Reddy had ordered for thousands of kids to munch on.

Siseko’s mother Nana Dlamini, a single mother from Inanda who works at a grocery store as a general worker, said her son’s life has never been the same. Siseko attends a special school, A.M. Moola Spes Nova, and has two other siblings. Last Christmas, Reddy showered Siseko and his younger sisters, Amahle (seven) and Sthandwa (two) with gifts.

“In January, he [Reddy] bought Siseko a laptop with Internet and paid R2 000 for stationery from his school,” said Dlamini.

On top of that, Siseko receives a monthly allowance.

Siseko’s medical needs are also taken care of and just recently he was taken to a specialist because he could not walk straight and used crutches.

But now he can, after Reddy bought his “son” a lightweight spine protector and special shoes that help with his movement.

Reddy said he does what he does because he loves children and it gives him joy. And for him there is no greater gift, he told The Witness.

Asked to name some of the artists he had in mind for his party in 2018, Reddy said he would like to bring Justin Bieber to perform for the children.
