Reed Dance death: MEC visits family

2009-09-15 00:00

KWAZULU-NATAL Arts and Culture MEC Weziwe Thusi visited the grieving family of a 14-year-old girl who was crushed and died in the annual Reed Dance at Nyokeni palace in Nongoma on Saturday.

Department spokesman Vukani Mbele said Thusi personally passed messages of condolences to the family of Mbali Mhlongo, who died in a stampede while jostling for promotional caps. Mhlongo was one of the thousands of young girls who took part in the Reed Dance.

Another young woman died on her way to a Durban hospital after complaining about a severe headache. Her death was not related to the stampede.

The department will assist with the funeral arrangements and pay for the cost of Mhlongo’s funeral, said Mbele.
