Reeva hated to fight, says ex

THE heartbroken former boyfriend of Reeva Steenkamp says the model hated fighting and would flee conflict.

Warren Lahoud (27), from Kensington in Johannesburg, dated Steenkamp for four-and-a-half years, until July last year and spoke out for the first time this week.

Like millions of South Africans he learned of her death last week on Valentine’s Day.

“What made it even more of a shock is that we had a very good relationship. It only ended because we grew apart, there were no substantial grievances, fighting or negativeness.

“There are so many [memorable things] about her,” he said.

“Reeva was a very understanding person. She could sit with anybody around the table and she’d immediately sum them up; she was very loving and extremely scared of any conflict; she didn’t like fighting. She’d rather leave and wait until things had calmed down and then settle things like a normal person,” he said.

Did he have a message for Oscar Pistorius?

“I don’t think I have the place to say anything; I’d rather leave it to the correct people. Obviously I have certain feelings, but it’s not my place to comment.

“Look, we ended things amicably, so we were friends. I didn’t hear that there were issues or anything [with her relationship with Pistorius]. We spoke now and then; we didn’t really speak all the time, but I never heard of anything negative,” he said.

He attended her funeral in Port Elizabeth earlier in the week and said her death was very difficult to come to terms with for everyone.

“It’s very difficult for everybody involved and everybody who knew her. She’s a very loving person, and she was not somebody who looked for trouble, she’d stay away from it as far as possible,” he said.

“She was loved everywhere she went; she just had that aura about her. She was young and had a lot ahead of her, so to come to terms with that the way it’s unfolding in the media, it makes it very difficult,” he said.

Following her funeral, he wrote: “One of the hardest days I have had to deal with!! You will be in my thoughts forever!! R.I.P my Reeves.”
